The original transmission brake on a Land Rover Defender is not the most efficient handbrake system. On vehicles used in wet and muddy conditions the brake can rapidly run out of adjustment or become partially or even completely seized. A seized brake is almost as likely to seize on as it is to seize off which can then lead to vibrations, overheating and accelerated wear. All of these issues ultimately result in a handbrake that does not work.
The Terrafirma disc brake handbrake kit uses a precision machined brake disc combined with a unique fully floating brake calliper that retains its brake pads that are gently sprung loaded to prevent rattling. The high clamping force of the calliper, even when combined with a smaller diameter disc than the original brake drum makes for a more effective system than a well serviced original set up. An added bonus of a smaller diameter brake disc is the reduced chance of the brake getting hung up on obstacles.
The Terrafirma disc brake handbrake kit comes with a sturdy mounting plate incorporating a disc protector as well as a new handbrake cable to ensure perfect operation.
